About HAIS

Hmong American Ink and Stories (HAIS, pronounced “Hi”for the Hmong word meaning to speak, to vocalize)

We are a student organization at Fresno State (Dept. of English) dedicated to empowering and cultivating literary opportunities for historically marginalized voices with a focus on Hmong and AAPI writers.

In the past decade, pioneering Hmong writers have established their voices in the literary world and have continued to pave new paths for new generations of Hmong writers. Organizations such as the Hmong American Writers’ Circle (HAWC) is an inspiration to the start of this club.

Hmong American Ink & Stories (HAIS) creates a space to reaffirm, encourage, and professionalize Hmong writers and other historically marginalized writers with a particular hope to empower Asian Pacific voices.

Utilizing the medium of writing, we encourage writers to become active participants in documenting themselves and their stories in a system that has historically left them behind. We seek to foster community and creativity, and be a welcoming space for members to write, share, and receive feedback on their work. Writing is not limited to literary endeavors and can be of academic and professional nature. In addition to publishing an annual literary journal and hosting a reading series, we also share resources about publications and current trends in the literary world focused on emerging Asian Pacific voices. We welcome writers of all backgrounds to join us.
